From a Fortress

From a Fortress

By Mingzhao Xu.

a lapis expanse lingers,
dark pines tower and roam,
beyond my eye’s grasp

as light retreats from day,
the calls of black birds rise and fade

my mind is spent,
memories bundled in twilight’s folds,
sent away

tomorrow, a new sun will rise
lighting up the stoney path

I will inhale,
new breath from lengthy rest,
to sing

MINGZHAO XU immigrated to the United States from China as a child. One of her greatest joys in life is using fiction to highlight the humor, challenges and pathos of her childhood. She currently lives in California.
