As if from the pits of Hell, the bony Anglerfish lures its prey in with a light, a long filament, sprouting from the top of its head. Studies indicate that this fascinating creature has been around for 130 million years.
Anglerfish are deep-sea dwellers and it is believed they reduce energy use by going into a lethargic state, laying while they wait for prey to come or passively drifting through the darkness.
Known as Sea Devils, it’s not too hard to imagine these fish in all kinds of creepy and bizaare story plots. They certainly don’t lack in ‘nightmarish’ qualities.
